About My First Speech

About the competition

The My First Speech competition is a great way for you to speak about issues you are passionate about.

Australian students enrolled in Years 10 to 12 are invited to enter the Department of the House of Representatives ‘My First Speech’ competition.

Imagine yourself as a newly elected Member of the House of Representatives. Your task is to write a 3-minute speech about issues you are passionate about.

A winner from each year group (10, 11 and 12) will be flown to Canberra to deliver their speeches live and undertake a program of meetings and tours at Parliament House.

All entries are collected through an online form where you will fill in your details and upload a transcript of your speech.

If you’re under 18, a parent or guardian will need to fill and sign the Consent and Release Agreement included in the entry form.

You will be asked to nominate the electorate you are entering from. If you don’t know your electorate you can look up your address on the AEC website. Remember, we want to know the electorate your home address is in, not your schools electorate which can be different.

How to enter

Entries for My First Speech 2025 have now closed. Entries for the 2026 competition will open on 25 May. Please return after this date to submit your entry.

Please contact MyFirstSpeech.reps@aph.gov.au with any questions.

Topics

Students can choose any topic they wish. Remember this is your first speech as a member of the House of Representatives, so it should be a topic or theme that you are passionate about and would like to share with your fellow parliamentarians and the nation.
