About My First Speech

The Department of the House of Representatives proudly presents the My First Speech competition – an initiative designed to provide senior secondary school students across Australia with a platform to connect with, and learn about, the work of the Australian Parliament.

Imagine yourself as a newly elected Member of the House of Representatives. Your task is to write a 3-minute (500 word) speech on a topic you are passionate about.

One winner from each senior secondary year group (Years 10, 11 and 12) will receive an expenses-paid trip to Canberra to deliver their speech live and undertake a program of meetings and tours at Parliament House.

Submit your entry through  the online form – you’ll be asked to fill in your details and you will need to upload a transcript of your speech.

If you’re under 18, a parent or guardian will need to fill and sign the Consent and Release Agreement included in the entry form.

You will be asked  which federal  electorate you live in. If you don’t know your federal electorate, you can look it up on the AEC website. Remember, we want to know the electorate your home address is in, not your school’s electorate, which can be different.
