Australian students in Year 10, 11 or 12 are eligible to enter the competition. The consent of a parent or guardian is required for students aged under 18.
The written script of your first speech should be no more than 500 words in length. When read out aloud, it should be no longer than 3 minutes.
It is completely up to you – just choose an issue are passionate about and that is important to you.
Your speech must be all your own material. For your own protection, avoid mentioning your full name or providing any identifying information in your speech. Your speech must not contain anything offensive.

No. Just upload your written work.
All submissions must be made through the online portal found on the My First Speech website. On the entry page, you will see a checklist and link to the online form.
No, there can only be one entry per person.
No. The competition is for individuals.
Entries are shortlisted by staff from the Department of the House of Representatives using the Judging Criteria. One winner from each year group is then selected by the judging panel made up of Members of Parliament, whose decision is final.
Winners will receive an expenses-paid trip to Canberra (flights and accommodation included).
They will attend a morning tea and a formal presentation at Parliament House where they will present their speech in person to the Speaker and receive a certificate.
Winners will participate in a program at Parliament House, including a tour of the building and attendance at Question Time.
Winners will also receive a prize pack worth $250.
Entries for My First Speech 2026 will close at 11:59pm (AEST) on Monday 20 July.
